Gun building and night hike

On the 13th - 14th November 3rd Billericay Scout troup took part in a gun building, gun firing and a night hike competition. It was organised by 5th Billericay. We first arrived at their Scout hut near Mill Meadows. We went it to the main hut to receive our "mission"; it was to take a hike to Hutton and back and then to then fire our gun outside 5th Billericays hut.

We started at 21:20 and assembled our cannon but then we dismantled it again to take it over the meadow! We left the gun propped up againt a tree ready to pick up on the return journey and proceeded on to the hike. Even though it was dark we still saw quite a lot of teenagers just sitting on the grass in Sun Corner recreation ground. We were told there were enemy "agents" trying to find us, if they found us they would deduct ten points, we got stopped twise so we lost a total of twenty points. It took us 3 hours 48 minutes to complete the hike. We then went back to the tree to pickup and assemble our cannon and then wheeled it the rest of the way across Mill Meadows. We then fired it. Most of us were tired so we then bedded down for the night in the hut.

In the morning after we woke up we had a nice hot breakfast (although one hashbrown was still frozen solid!) and then went back to the meadow for us to fire the cannons with the other groups. Ours was the second best gun and reached the end of the  field that we were firing on. After we had all finished we all packed up and our parents collected us.

District Night Hike Report

On the 7th of March 3rd Billericay Orion Scout Troop joined other troops in the district for a 4 mile night hike. We started from 1st Runwell scout hut near Wickford. Each group headed off from a staggered start at 8 o’clock.

Each group had a leader, map, compass and set of questions to answer at each checkpoint. A few of the groups got lost but the weather was okay so this didn’t annoy us too much. Most of it was on public footpaths but some of it was through fields.

When we got back to the scout hut we had hot chocolate and watched a film. Then we spent the night in our sleeping bags on the floor and had a cooked breakfast in the morning before our parents came to pick us up.
