Everything comes to those who wait - Donation received from Round Table

Orion troop has just received a contribution to its Jamboree Fund from Billericay Round Table in recognition for its help at last year’s Firework Display.

We had hoped that we might receive a couple of hundred pounds and were very pleased to see the amount sent by the Round Table to be £600. The troop as a whole put in over 50 scout-hours of work in bonfire-building and selling light-sticks at the main gate. The troop was helped by former members Nathan and Jonathan and Akela of Jeebi Cub Pack, Margaret Wares.

The letter from the Treasurer of the Round Table that accompanied the cheque indicated that the event was one of the most successful ever staged and thanked the troop for all its help. Over £35,000 was raised for good causes.

The money given to the troop will be used to reduce the cost to parents of sending their scout children to the Essex International Jamboree to be held in Kirby-le-Soken in the coming summer.

As well as helping the Round Table raise £35,000, the troop has also raised £370 for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity over the Christmas period with its bag-packing efforts. To quote the famous Tom Lehrer song – we’re “doing well, by doing good”

Scouts Make Money for Macmillan

Scouts from Orion Troop of 3rd Billericay Scouts Group presented a cheque for Macmillan Cancer Support to Somerfield in Billericay following a successful Bag-packing exercise before Christmas.

Luke Smith, Tom Gerard, Ben Gerard and Joseph Scourfield presented a cheque for £130 to Ade Ogunsowo, of Somerfield’s High Street, Billericay store on Saturday. Macmillan Cancer Support , Somerfield’s charity for this year, improves the lives of people affected by cancer. It provides practical, medical, emotional and financial support and campaigns for better cancer care.

The donation is part of the proceeds of some bag-packing at the High Street store that the scouts did before Christmas to raise funds to join an international Jamboree in the summer. Scout Leader Colin Burrough said “We are pleased to make the donation to this wonderful charity and wish to thank Somerfield for its cooperation in helping us the raise funds for the jamboree and the charity”.

Ade Ogunsowo, one on Somerfields management team at the store was pleased to accept the donation on behalf of the Macmillan Cancer Support. He said “Somerfield is always pleased to support the efforts of young people. We are happy to provide the opportunity for these youngsters to raise money by providing a useful service to our customers. We are especially pleased that the Scouts have decided to support Macmillan Cancer Support in this very public way.”
